CHAPTER 14

There was nothing Jemma could do or say to change Draco’s mind. She wrestled with the ramifications of her actions, but there was nothing she could do to change them. She hadn’t accepted that she was his mate, but his mind was made up. So she lay in the warmth and comfort of his large bed with the afternoon sun filtering in.

Draco ran his fingers along her shoulder. A whisper of a caress against her skin. “Are you ready to attempt the spell?”

She tipped her chin up as her head rested on his shoulder. “Yes. I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to fix what’s broken in my life. I don’t want to wait another minute.”

They rose from the bed. But Draco grabbed her sweatpants and shirt from the floor. “Mara did some shopping for you. She thinks you and Natalie are approximately the same size and hopes that you like the clothes she’s picked for you.” He opened his closet and revealed the astounding array of female garments.

Her heart clenched as she ran her hands over the soft material. Each one was thoughtful. How did she repay this kindness without breaking a dragon’s heart? “This is incredibly kind of her.”

“She wishes you to feel welcome in our family. As do I.”

She leafed through the various styles and chose a simple white T-shirt and light blue capris. She wasn’t even surprised when both fit perfectly. “Thank you.”

Draco got dressed in jeans and a black T-shirt. He led her down stairs to the small room that held the tablet. He brought the supplies from Inn Plain Sight, yet she was still unclear as to what they would need.

They closed the door behind them, then stood before the tablet. “What’s next?” she asked.

“I am wondering if you speak the words on the tablet?”

“It’s worth a shot.” She recalled the words in her mind. “Born of the dark. The betrayer is saved. When the truth comes to light, the way will be revealed. Only the descendant of the daughter may enter. The truth will set me free and my treasure bestowed.”

Draco glanced between her and the tablet. “Do you feel anything?”

“No.”

He pointed to the symbols etched at the top. “The scratched-out symbol is the mage circle. I think we need to figure out what these other symbols represent.”

Jemma ran her finger over the engravings. “They look like hieroglyphics.”

Draco’s eyes widened. “I never considered the tablet contained script from different cultures. If we continue with that premise. The hand could be the symbol for hold or worship. The symbol that looks like wheat could be straw or herb. The face with closed eyes is sleep or trance.”

She accessed the secular knowledge. The ritual rolled through her mind. You need to burn herbs that sedate my body but don’t affect my mind. What you’re describing is a form of astral projection. I must hold the tablet once my heart rate has slowed.”

Draco looked through the bag. There are a couple of herbs in here that will work for you.
